The definition of love varies from one person to another. To one, it’s sharing their hot and well-seasoned pack of fresh popcorn with a stranger at the cinema. To another, it’s the inexplicable feeling of intense physical and emotional attraction towards somebody of the opposite sex—emphasis on opposite! While to the other, love is bringing their car to a complete stop on a busy road so that a stranded elderly lady can cross in front of them.
At the intersection of all these demonstrations is the element of immensity. Love is arguably the most powerful force in existence. It could very well be stronger than gravity! By this, we can truly appreciate concepts such as “I love you to the moon and back”, because we understand the measure of force required to lift off the earth and reach the moon!
Though physically unseen, the expression of love is visible, and that’s how we’re all able to narrate our personal experiences of it. Undoubtedly, all other human virtues hold together by the sublimity of this phenomenon that ultimately defines the content of good character.
Greater Love is the title track to an Extended Play (EP) by a group of Ugandan musicians that go by the name Zoe Melodies. They are newfangled and have a style of music that, generally, not only pokes at the stresses and complexities of our contemporary society, but also suggests solutions.
The R’n’B tune launches you onto a path of discovery of a love that is constant and has no flip side. A love that is stronger than death or any expression of it—fear, sickness, disease et al: one far more superior than the commonly-known interpersonal affection, and isn’t influenced by external variables. The love of Jesus!
This love is encapsulated in the rich lyrics of this song. That, when all else is silent and you have purposely chosen to calm from the bustle of a busy world, you will surely hear the LORD’s voice. And His voice will not merely be poetry pleonasms, but an actual experience of Him.
The vocal leads are a gentleman called Dave and a lady whose name is Dorothy, doing tenor and alto, respectively. They’re supported by a solid backup team whose mellow melodiousness forms the backbone of a warm and unisoned chorus.
Whereas the instrumentation and rhythm in the opening seconds are somewhat reminiscent of a favorite pop classic of Sade’s from the 1980’s; a wonderful blend of the tenor and alto in the fourth minute of Greater Love results in an explosion of pleasurable listening experience to climax this enchanting piece of music. And just like that, 4 minutes came and went!
As the quasi-romance season eases in, it’s totally conceivable that the anticipation of many is for the period to end on an impressionable high. But much more than lure your beloved or darling and charm them into your den of desire, it’s prudent to widen the spectrum of your expectations; realizing that the Author of love is beckoning too.
So, are you in love, looking for love or rising from the ashes of a nasty heartbreak? This generally feels like the ideal music to wear down any form of cynicism by attrition, and get you charged up with a fresh surge of warm vibes, positive thoughts and exciting experiences.
